A Facebook post from Christal
asks for directions,
not to somewhere,
rather where somewhere is:
North.
Needing that spot in space
to catch a comet coming by
every 6,800 years!
She didn’t want to miss it,
on this try.
Christal wasn’t clear
where North is,
or West or South or East.
Her FB friends,
not to proud to admit it,
weren’t either.
I am one of Christal’s
High School teachers,
navigating FB,
For the joys of reconnection
as are her FBF, her BF’s!
It’s been years
since Christal graduated,
and 10 since I retired…
Gives you a good sense
of Christal’s heart:
No one wants to loose touch.
Her favorite joke on herself?
At Fourteen,
she pleaded with her Mom
to let her dye her hair,
Blonde.
You remember,
“If I have only one life…”
So her rich brunette morphed to
Blonde.
Then,
(and here’s her joke),
she took unto herself
all those Blonde-Jokes
to become,
at first as a role,
and later, as Her.
She became the much loved
Dizzy Blonde,
of course while being
the great success
in everything she’s tried!
Thus the “Where is North?”
Facebook post,
copied below.
A conversation
worthy of preservation.
Christal:
How do you find a comet
if you don’t know your North from your West?
Would hate to have to wait
another 6,800 years!
They say,”just after sunset”,
which is now
but I can’t see one single star yet,
let alone a comet!
Various Friends:
…Storming here so I couldn’t see it anyway.
…Don’t ask me! I get lost getting out of my driveway!
…Don’t ask me either!
My family tells me I could get lost
in my closet!
The ever pedantic teacher chimes in:
…Think of where your sun rises near your house.
Then think about where it sets.
Face the sun rise place
with your back to the sun set place.
If you know your right from your left,
and the clouds don’t shade,
you’ve got it made!
From that position,
more or less,
your right elbow points south,
your left elbow points north,
more or less.
Follow your left elbow!
Got it?
Enjoy the comet!
Christal responds:
…By the time I read and absorbed
all the necessities,
I missed the comet!
(LOL!)
but I loved your directions, though.
And that is exactly it!
North!
Thank-you!
Teacher rambling-on, still:
…and now, according to my sundial,
it is 15 min. before 1 A.M.
or 45 min after midnight,
depending on your sense
of what is coming in your future
or what has happened in your past…
either way,
it’s late
and Nancy
is calling me to bed
and that is a summons
never to be denied.
Nite-Nite….keng
Christal, still in between the lines:
…and does it matter that I was born
9 minutes before leap year?
Teacher, like, now, like totally lost:
…Explicate?
Christal, now back to her true self:
…a question for another day
Because Nancy’s
orbital summons
is superior
to all this nonsense.
And rightly so,
Professor,
and so,
Good Night!
This is how FB friendships
fulfill their full potential…
May none of us be left behind
and may our True North
always be,
so easy to find.
Oh , how I love this! You’ve captured the secret, I believe. The worthy endeavor of searching for North is completed best in true, lifelong friends, and those that really get you. Thats my true North, so I’m not lost anymore. Thank you Ken for such a humorous, creative expression of what it means to be a blond stargazer! π
