Oh!
How deep the current of somnolence
rises with the tide
to soft slumber,
to easy awakening
in an early Springs cool mornings
sepia shaded bedroom.
Sun filters through linen-lace curtains.
Fleece blankets caress,
warmed by and warming my body.
A gray cotton sheet shrouds my eyes.
My lady, smiling, slides it down, gently.
I catch the sunlights shine.
And in that twinkling moment,
between nights sleep and day
comes the de-ja-vu
of having been here
once, twice, a thousand times before.
The remembered moment’s
recalled in reverse.
The sky beyond the lace,
darkens.
The drowsy doze lays heavy on my lids,
closing.
The sheet drawn up over them by loving hands.
Tears fall.
So comes that ever soft sleep,
again.
Oh!
