I wonder what Saint Francis did
about Assisi squirrels?
Did he yell from the monastery porch
to scare them off?
Did he charge them,
gray robes flying behind him,
yelling Italian profanities,
gesticulating as he came on
like some Latin lunatic?
Or,
did he smile at those
other children of God,
four-legged, gray-furred abbots and monks
genuflecting
among the cardinals,
and mix corn kernels
with the sunflower seeds he tossed
every morning,
after matins?
I believe he smiled at these other children of God and tossed them corn and sunflower seeds. So glad to find this poem! Here’s one of my stories about St. Francis: https://joannaoftheforest.wordpress.com/2018/10/07/saint-francis-tames-a-ferocious-wolf-2/
