984 To Dine Alone

The Cardinal and his Lady

sup together every evening,

but take their seed

from different feeders,

as well they should.

For they pass their days

together in hectic flight,

from limb to branch

with hawks in sight.

Yet each bares the others burdens,

they are allied in every fight.

So by the time the sun is setting

and the dinner bell is ringing

they deserve some time alone

before both are winging home

to usher in their night

and married life!
