I’m not a pampered princess
rendered rest-less by a pea.
But I believe a hospital bed should
be as comfy as it can be.
Coincidentally,
I ” almost-slept” in one last night.
A cardiac-false-alarm-fright
where all turned out alright.
(certainly better than the alternative!)
But,
THAT MATRESS,
in the rumpled-memories-of-my-midnight-nightmares
was a new plowed field in a rain soaked Spring.
high ridges,
deep hollows
bumpy clods
last Autumns corn stalks.
I will cherish, hence-forth
, our queen sized bed
as I sleep at home tonight,
and thank the Lord that I’m not dead
and for the coming mornings light.
