He sees himself
but doesn’t know himself
but he knows
what he sees
and doesn’t like it.
He sees himself,
rust-breast-feathers-fluffed,
blue-angry-wings-flapping…
and what he sees is
frightening.
To defend himself
against himself
he attacks that self
he sees mirrored in the window.
And he cracks his scull
on reflecting glass,
on what he thought
was his enemy,
but was himself.
And in the dark, silent
aftermath of his assault
on this enemy,
this himself
he has never known,
at last, he rests in a peace
he has never known
before.
