469 What did you expect? Dec. 2012

What did you expect, Mary Todd,
when you met him,
gangling spinner of Truths?
Your blue eyes sparkled
as he breathed wrath.
How could you have known that
they who stand to close to glory
are driven into the fog of madness,
only refuge for those scorched
by epiphany not their own?
In his consuming quest for freedom,
where else could you breathe but imprisoned
behind the bars forged in the fires
of your own slavery?
