204 A thought after close a election

It is a good quilt.
Though
Worn and patched,
faded where the wear has
rubbed closest to us
through long winter sleeps.
Children have stolen it
to tent in the back yard,
cat and dog have curled on it
in a surrepticious snooze
when we were away to long.
We have washed it,
hung it out to dry,
watched the wind wip it on the line
and still the stitchings hold
firm and tight,
Held together now, for centuries,
our American quilt.
