32 – GIVIN’ DIRECTIONS

“…and then you’ll come
to a split in the road, boy’
Yeah, you’ll come to the fork.
One’ll go off to the right,
then up the mountain.
T’ other’ll sort of veer off left,
t’go round.
One’s easy, other’s hard…
goin up n’all, ya know.
But, the view! God!
But that’s a Grand view,
up there…
you’ll get t’where you’re goin’
with either road.
But yer goin’ t’miss a
mighty spectacle
if ya take the road ‘goes round.
Then again,”
he said, disappointment dulling
the gleem in his eyes,
“I suspect yer’ a flatlander…”

Well, I was hurried
but I took the
goin-over-the-top-road.
I suppose I’d been
there
by now if I’d
taken the going around road, but…
It’s the view!
I can’t get beyond it!
And the top’s fairly littered
with narrow paths
I’ve taken to be curious about,
you know,
just to see.
